Celebrating a Mass for a particular intention is a longstanding tradition in the Church. The graces of the Mass are infinite because it is Christ who offers Himself, but we participate by offering ourselves and our prayers with Him. A person may offer a stipend for a particular Mass Intention (for one who has died, or an anniversary, or other special intention) thus contributing to the good of the Church. In no way is the Church "selling Masses." The donation is a sign of the donor's sacrificial offering. A donation of $10 is requested.
