Father's Bulletin Letter 3.5.23
Mar 02, 2023
Greetings,
This Friday, March 3, we welcomed the Most Reverend Edward Malesic to St. Sebastian in his role as our chief shepherd to bring into full communion our confirmation candidates as well as those from St. Bernard and St. Mary, by conferring upon them the sacrament of confirmation. Thank you for your visit Bishop. It is always a pleasure to have you here in Akron. Although the Bishop has been to St. Sebastian a few times since becoming our ordinary, this was the first time that he celebrated Mass with us!
Congratulations to all of our confirmation candidates. Now the work in the field begins as fully initiated Catholics and the responsibility of continually growing in the faith falls upon your capable shoulders. Be strong, be an inspiration to others, know that all that you do is of extreme importance even when you feel it is not. Perhaps especially then. Thank you for working toward and engaging in this sacrament.
Also, thank you to all of our catechists and teachers without whom this monumental task would not have been possible. Parents, sponsors and those who inspire these young ladies and gentlemen, you have made it possible for these candidates to grow in their faith and in their identity as sons and daughters of our Father and so a part of you is carried forth in them. A blessing to you for your guidance and example. Finally, welcome to all of our guests to St. Sebastian Parish. I hope you always feel welcome to return and worship here whenever you find yourself in the neighborhood. Special note for those who read the bulletin early: No 7pm Stations of the Cross this Friday due to Confirmation.
IN OTHER NEWS:
NEW PAINTING: A painting of the “Placing of Christ in the Tomb” is on display in the Padre Pio chapel, the former baptistry in the rear of the church. It was created a few years ago by Litvinov Oleg Arkadievich, a Ukrainian artist who currently lives in Ukraine. In fact, when the painting was shipped to the United States, it was with the caution, “We are a nation at war. The painting will leave the studio intact but no assurances can be made.” It did arrive safely and is on display for your contemplation and prayer during Lent.
RELICS: While you are in the Padre Pio chapel, you will also find a display of many of our relics.
PARENTS: So many of you make the sacrifice of your time, effort and resources to make sure that your child is receiving Catholic formation through the parish school and parish school of religion (PSR). Coming to Sunday Mass is the completion and greatest gift toward your child’s education and nothing serves them better in matters of salvation. I encourage you to keep up your efforts in family Sunday Mass particularly during this holy season of Lent.
PRESCHOOL: Our pre-school is filling up quickly. Some classes are already full. If you are a parishioner wishing to make use our pre-school, please contact the school immediately. I don’t want you to miss out.
TOBCLE: If you receive this bulletin early, this Saturday is the Theology of the Body, Cleveland presentation at St. Sebastian. See their website (TOBCLE) for details and costs.
MISSION: Our parish mission is coming up March 12-14. Each night, Fr. Denk will be presenting at 7pm. The mission is free and open to the public.
RICE BOWLS: Rice bowls are a way of remembering those who are less fortunate during Lent. All the money collected will be given to Catholic Relief Services to help those in need. Please take one home with you from one of the Church entrances.
God bless,
Fr. Valencheck
